SUBJECT: Voting in upcoming 2013 ILAS Elections
----------------------------------------------------------

In the upcoming ILAS elections, electronic voting will again be used, with Votenet
Solutions, the company that has conducted previous ILAS elections (and that is used by
SIAM to conduct its elections).

Each member will be e-mailed an individual username and password and instructions for
electronic voting. This e-mail will be sent on or about November 20, 2013. You may vote as
soon as you receive your username and password. Voting will conclude on January 20, 2014.
Any member who prefers to vote by paper ballot should e-mail the Secretary/Treasurer
Leslie Hogben to request a paper ballot; such request must be
received by November 10.

You can determine whether or not you are a 2013 member of ILAS (as of Oct. 28, 2013) by
consulting the website
http://www.ilasic.org/misc/membership.html

Please note:
1) This is the only current online list of ILAS members, even thought there may be other
sites with old lists of ILAS members.
2) Receiving ILAS-net messages does not make you an ILAS member. See
http://www.ilasic.org/misc/membership.html for information about ILAS membership.

After November 10, it is no longer possible to add online voters, so anyone whose
membership is processed after that date will receive a PDF ballot to be printed and
returned like a paper ballot. Please note that it takes about 2 weeks to process
memberships, and no 2013 memberships will be accepted for processing after December 7,
2013 (2014 memberships will continue to be accepted but will probably not processed before
2014).

2013 September 03 ......... ILAS-NET Message No. 1959
----------------------------------------------------------
CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Steven Leon
SUBJECT: Articles on Teaching Proofs in Linear Algebra
----------------------------------------------------------

Fellow ILAS members,

Below is a message I received from Aliza Steurer. She is seeking articles on proof writing
in linear algebra courses for inclusion in a forthcoming book. In many cases the linear
algebra course is the first mathematics course where students encounter proofs. So it is
altogether appropriate for a book on proof writing to include articles focusing on
teaching proofs in linear algebra. All who teach linear algebra can benefit if we share
our ideas on introducing proofs in the first course in linear algebra. I encourage ILAS
members to send articles on this subject to Aliza Schurer.

Steve Leon, Chair, ILAS Education Committee

Forwarded message from Aliza Steurer:

We, Aliza Steurer, Rachel Schwell, and Jennifer Franko Vasquez, are preparing a
manuscript, tentatively titled Innovative Techniques for Teaching Proof-Writing, that has
received preliminary approval by the MAA Notes Series Editorial Board. We are seeking
short articles (about five-to-six pages), each of which should discuss an innovative
method for teaching students how to write proofs, specifically in the context of an
undergraduate linear algebra course. (The book is actually about teaching proof-writing
throughout the undergraduate curriculum, but at this time we seek papers in particular
about teaching proofs in linear algebra.) Some articles already included in the volume
focus on using technology, writing a class journal of proofs, peer review, and ways of
actively engaging large (30+) classes in proof-writing. These are just examples; we are
open to considering any method.

If you are unsure that your idea is appropriate for the volume and do not want to invest
the time to write a full-length article only to discover that it is not, please do feel
free to send us a short paragraph (to the email address below) describing your technique,
and we will be happy to respond to you regarding the prospects of your potential paper.

Details regarding what the volume is about, what the article should include, its length,
points of discussion, timeline for submission, etc., can be found at this site:
https://sites.google.com/site/proofsbook/ (although please note that the timeline you see
on the website only applies to authors who have already submitted). Your article would be
due by October 15, 2013. Please note that submission of an article does not guarantee
inclusion in the volume. Inclusion is determined by us as well as the MAA Notes Series
Editorial Board.

If you are interested, please send an inquiry to the e-mail address proofsbook@gmail.com,
at which point we will give you further information, guidelines, and a template for
writing your article. So that all editors may see your inquiry, please do not reply
directly to Aliza.

We look forward to your submissions!

Sincerely,

Aliza Steurer, Rachel Schwell, and Jennifer Franko Vasquez

CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Frank Uhlig
SUBJECT: The Olga Taussky-Todd Lecture at ICIAM Congresses
----------------------------------------------------------

The Olga Taussky-Todd Lecture at ICIAM Congresses

                          Two Announcements

Since 2007 the Olga Taussky-Todd Lecture is given every four years at the International
Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM). This honor is conferred on a
"woman who has made outstanding contributions in applied mathematics and/or scientific
computation". The lecture is named in tribute and memory of Olga Taussky-Todd, whose
scientific legacy is in both theoretical and applied mathematics, and whose work
exemplifies the qualities to be recognized.

(1) Call for Nominations:

A Taussky-Todd Lecture Committee at ICIAM has been appointed to select the OTT Lecturer
for the next ICIAM Congress in Beijing, August 10 - 14, 2015.

Nominations of women working in applied or computational mathematics can be submitted via
http://www.iciam.org/OTT/OTT-CallforNominations.pdf
until November 30, 2013.

(2) The Olga Taussky-Todd Lectureship Fund drive at ICIAM

ICIAM has begun to seek permanent funding for its Olga Taussky-Todd Lectures at all future
ICIAM Congresses through a drive for donations that are tax deductible in the US.

The first and almost complete fund phase has involved individuals that are intimately
connected to Olga's work and life as well as others connected more loosely. This has
generated a broad response from dozens of mathematicians with donations from 7 different
countries on 3 continents thus far.

We now seek donations from other mathematicians and, later on, from corporations to reach
our overall funding goal of approximately $ 60,000 by the end of this year. We welcome
your support for promoting the achievements of outstanding female applied or industrial
mathematicians at ICIAM Congresses every 4 years.

Donations are encouraged and welcome in any amount. They can be made at
http://iciam-donations.siam.org .

Olga Taussky-Todd Lectures at previous ICIAM Congresses since 2007 are described at
http://www.iciam.org/council/council_tf.html
and a short personal reminiscence of Olga is available by clicking on the 'get pdf' icon at

SUBJECT: Launch of New ILAS-Net Service
----------------------------------------------------------

In the last year, ILAS has decided to move its web and email service from any specific
university to a commercial site. We have found that as people retire, getting service
remotely has become increasingly difficult. With much hard work, we have completed the
move of ILAS-Net from Technion to a new commercial service. I thank everyone at Technion
for their work and support for both the ILAS-IC website and ILAS-Net.

Looking forward, this new service is voluntary and it is much easier for members of
ILAS-net to manage their subscriptions. At the bottom of each email is a footer which
gives links to how to unsubscribe to ILAS-Net and the Privacy Policy for the list
management.

Thank you to all for your patience during this transition.
