-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2015 December 08 ILAS-NET Message No. 2084 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Joerg Liesen SUBJECT: New Linear Algebra Textbook -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Linear Algebra by Jrg Liesen and Volker Mehrmann Springer Verlag / xi + 324 pages / Softcover / ISBN 978-3-319-24344-3 / List Price $39.99 http://www.springer.com/us/book/9783319243443 This self-contained textbook takes a matrix-oriented approach to linear algebra and presents a complete theory, including all details and proofs, culminating in the Jordan canonical form and its proof. Throughout the development, the applicability of the results is highlighted. Additionally, the book presents special topics from applied linear algebra including matrix functions, the singular value decomposition, the Kronecker product and linear matrix equations. The matrix-oriented approach to linear algebra leads to a better intuition and a deeper understanding of the abstract concepts, and therefore simplifies their use in real world applications. Some of these applications are presented in detailed examples. In several 'MATLAB-Minutes' students can comprehend the concepts and results using computational experiments. Necessary basics for the use of MATLAB are presented in a short introduction. Students can also actively work with the material and practice their mathematical skills in more than 300 exercises. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2015 December 01 ILAS-NET Message No. 2083 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Xuhua Liu SUBJECT: Recent Advances in Linear Algebra and Graph Theory -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Recent Advances in Linear Algebra and Graph Theory" First Announcement March 5-6, 2016 (Saturday-Sunday) The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Overview: This conference honors the career of Dr. Ronald L. The Genomic Signal Processing Lab is widely recognized for breaking new ground in mathematics, genetics, and at the interface between the two fields, since our highly cited invention of the "eigengene." We pioneered both matrix and tensor modeling of large-scale molecular biological data, and demonstrated that they can be used to correctly predict previously unknown cellular mechanisms. Postdoctoral and Ph.D. alumni of our lab have gone on to faculty positions at major universities and data science leadership positions at pharmaceutical companies and financial institutions. The postdoctoral scholar and graduate students will participate in (i) the development of new mathematical frameworks that generalize the singular value decomposition (SVD) from one two-dimensional dataset to multiple high-dimensional datasets; (ii) the use of these frameworks in the computational modeling of patient-matched genomic profiles from, e.g., the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA); and (iii) the experimental testing of the models in collaboration with our colleagues from the University of Utah School of Medicine. This work is expected to offer answers to the open question of the relation between a tumor's genome and a patient's outcome. The successful postdoctoral applicant will have (i) a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, bioengineering, physics, or a related discipline, (ii) with research, possibly also work experience in data science, preferably also scientific computing and genetics, and (iii) a track record of published papers and conference presentations. To apply for the postdoctoral position, please e-mail your CV, including the contact information for three references, to Orly Alter by January 15, 2016. The successful graduate applicants will have (i) a B.Sc. or an M.Sc. in applied mathematics, bioengineering, physics, or a related discipline, (ii) some additional background in genetics, and (iii) some research or work experience in data science, preferably with a track record of published papers or theses, or conference presentations. To apply for a graduate position, please submit your application to the University of Utah Graduate School by January 15, 2016 - https://www.bioen.utah.edu/education/graduate/graduate_admissions/graduate_admissions. php. The University of Utah is one of the most innovative institutions in bioengineering, computer science, and human genetics. If you have not yet voted, you may vote any time through11:59 PM GMT Dec 31 but it is recommended to vote by Dec 30. Note: The end date of the election is Dec 31, not in January as previously announced on ILAS-Net. ILAS operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the election ends at 11:59 PM GMT regardless of the time zone you are in. So for many people the election ends early in the day Dec 31, and it is recommended to vote by Dec 30. If you did not receive an e-mail and wish to vote, please verify that you are a 2015 member (remember, receiving ILAS-Net messages does not imply you are an ILAS member). You can determine whether or not you are a 2015 member of ILAS (as of Nov. 8, 2015) by consulting the website: http://www.ilasic.org/misc/membership.html If you are a member and did not receive an e-mail, please contact Leslie Hogben , ILAS Secretary Treasurer, to obtain your username and password. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2015 October 21 ILAS-NET Message No. 2077 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Leslie Hogben, ILAS Secretary/Treasurer SUBJECT: Voting In Upcoming 2015 ILAS Elections -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the upcoming ILAS elections, electronic voting will again be used, with Votenet Solutions, the company that has conducted previous ILAS elections (and that is used by SIAM to conduct its elections). Each member will be e-mailed an individual username and password and instructions for electronic voting. This e-mail will be sent on or about November 15, 2015. You may vote as soon as you receive your username and password. Voting will conclude on January 15, 2016. Any member who prefers to vote by paper ballot (or PDF ballot to be printed) should e-mail the Secretary/Treasurer Leslie Hogben to request a paper ballot; such request must be received by November 8. You can determine whether or not you are a 2015 member of ILAS (as of Oct. 18, 2015) by consulting the website http://www.ilasic.org/misc/membership.html Please note: This is the only current online list of ILAS members, even though there may be other sites with old lists of ILAS members. Receiving ILAS-net messages does not make you an ILAS member. See http://www.ilasic.org/misc/membership.html for information about ILAS membership. After November 8, it is no longer possible to add online voters, so anyone whose membership is processed after that date will receive a PDF ballot to be printed and returned like a paper ballot. Please note that it takes about 2 weeks to process memberships, and no 2015 memberships will be accepted for processing after December 9, 2015 (2016 memberships will continue to be accepted but will probably not processed before 2016). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2015 October 20 ILAS-NET Message No. 2076 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Richard Brualdi SUBJECT: Deadline for Nominations For The 2016 Hans Schneider Prize -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reminder of the December 1, 2015 deadline for Nominations for the 2016 Hans Schneider Prize of the International Linear Algebra Society The International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) is seeking nominations for its 2016 Hans Schneider Prize. The developments gradually allow us to move from classical vector and matrix based methods in applied mathematics and mathematical engineering to methods that involve tensors of arbitrary order. This step from linear transformations, quadratic and bilinear forms to polynomials and multilinear forms is relevant for the most diverse applications. Furthermore, tensor methods have firm roots in multilinear algebra, algebraic geometry, numerical mathematics and optimization. This workshop will bring together researchers investigating tensor decompositions and their applications. It will feature a series of invited talks by leading experts and contributed presentations on specific problems. TDA 2016 is held in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and has been endorsed by the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS). ILAS-NET Message No. 2047 ---------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Chi-Kwong Li SUBJECT: Leiba Rodman ---------------------------------------------------------- Below is an excerpt of the announcement sent to the faculty of College of William & Mary by the Provost Michael Halleran. It is with deep sadness that I write to share the news that Professor Leiba Rodman, Professor of Mathematics, passed away on Monday, March 2. Professor Rodman joined the College of William & Mary in 1987. He had earned his Ph.D. from Tel-Aviv University and had previously served on the faculty at Tel-Aviv University and Arizona State University. During his long productive research career, Professor Rodman made substantial contributions to a variety of mainstream mathematical subjects, among them, linear algebra and matrix theory, matrix and operator-valued functions, Krein-space operator theory, linear preserver problems, and, most recently, quaternionic linear algebra. He published eight monographs and over 330 journal research papers. His most recent book, "Topics in Quaternion Linear Algebra" published by Princeton University Press in 2014, was written during his courageous battle with cancer. Professor Rodman served the mathematics community as Editor-in-Chief of "Operators and Matrices" and as an Associate Editor of three other journals. He had many research collaborators and was particularly helpful with guidance to young researchers at William & Mary and elsewhere. A special issue of "Linear Algebra and its Applications" dedicated to his 65th birthday will appear shortly. At the College, Professor Rodman was one of the first recipients of the Plumeri award in 2009. As a member of the Mathematics Department, Leiba was unfailingly generous with his time and his regard for his colleagues. Professor Rodman was a devoted and effective teacher. He taught a wide variety of courses from the standard curriculum and beyond, and directed dozens of honors projects and undergraduate research projects. Survivors are Leiba's wife, Ella; two sons, Daniel and Benjamin; and two daughters, Ruth and Naomi. A memorial service is scheduled for this Thursday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Williamsburg Memorial Park, 130 King William Drive. Our deepest sympathies go out to Professor Rodmans family and friends. ************************************************************************** ILAS-NET ************************************************************************** 2015 March 02 ......... ILAS-NET Message No. 2032 ---------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Derrick Stolee SUBJECT: Rocky Mountain--Great Plains Graduate Research Workshop in Combinatorics 2015 ---------------------------------------------------------- Rocky Mountain--Great Plains Graduate Research Workshop in Combinatorics 2015 (GRWC 2015) June 1--12, 2015 (Arrive May 31, depart June 13) Iowa State University Ames, IA, USA GRWC is a 2--week collaborative research workshop for experienced graduate students from all areas of combinatorics, broadly interpreted. Students will work in collaborative groups with faculty and postdocs on research problems from across the discipline. The workshop will also host a variety of professional development workshops to prepare students and postdocs for the job hunt and their transition to the careers in academia, government, or industry. All graduate students applying to participate in the GRWC will submit an open problem in combinatorics. Organizing faculty will engage in 1--on--1 mentoring with participants to help them refine their submissions. These problems will form the basis of the collaborative research undertaken at the workshop. We anticipate funding (lodging, some meals, and in some cases travel) for 10--20 graduate students from outside of the organizing institutions. Applications are encouraged from students at institutions both within and outside the United States. There is funding both for students from US institutions as well as funding for those from outside of the US. Applications can be submitted at MathPrograms.org. The organizing committee will begin considering applications on February 16th and will respond to all applications by March 13. More information is available at the workshop website: http://sites.google.com/site/rmgpgrwc Apply at https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/355 Please direct all inquiries to grwc2015@gmail.com The organizing institutions for GRWC are Iowa State University, University of Colorado Denver, University of Denver, University of Nebraska--Lincoln, and University of Wyoming. The workshop is funded in part by these institutions, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), Elsevier, the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS), and we have applied for US NSF funding. ************************************************************************** ILAS-NET ************************************************************************** 2015 January 12 ......... ILAS-NET Message No. 2029 ---------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Peter Semrl SUBJECT: ILAS Program Review Committee Recommendations ---------------------------------------------------------- The Report and Recommendations of the ILAS Program Review Committee contains the following recommendation (in the section on ILAS Conferences): Recommendation 1.1 In the (revised) guidelines referred to above, it is stipulated that the ILAS President serves ex officio as a member of the Organizing Committee, and that he may appoint an additional member of the Organizing Committee to serve as ILAS's representative. The PRC proposes that the latter will be done on a permanent basis and that the person in question will be a member of the ILAS Board with the specific responsibility to be the linking pin between the ILAS Board and subsequent ILAS Conference Organizing Committees. This will enhance continuity and the transfer of useful experience. Also it will help in determining the long(er) term direction of the scientific program, including the promotion of fruitful interactions with related mathematical (sub)fields. The Board of directors has now decided to follow the above recommendation by appointing Steve Kirkland as the second Vice-President of ILAS (for ILAS conferences). His term begins on January 1, 2015 and ends on February 28, 2017 (thus, his term ends at the same time as the term of the present ILAS President). Steve will be a member of the Executive Committee and a nonvoting member of the ILAS Board of Directors, and will serve as a connection between organizers of ILAS Conferences and ILAS Executive Committee. As an organizer of the ILAS Conference in 2005 and a former ILAS President, Steve is ideally qualified to help the organizers with advice, advising that all the steps in preparation of the conference are made on time, and taking part in looking for the organizers of the forthcoming conferences. ************************************************************************** ILAS-NET ************************************************************************** 2015 January 02 .........
