------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2018 December 15 ILAS-NET Message No. 2229 CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Peter Semrl SUBJECT: 2019 HS Prize Lectures There is a change in previously announced Hans Schneider Prize Lectures in 2019 and 2020: Volker Mehrman will be awarded the prize at the ILAS Conference in Rio de Janeiro in 2019, and Lek-Heng Lim will be awarded the prize at the ILAS Conference in Galway in 2020. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2018 December 12 ILAS-NET Message No. 2228 CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Peter Semrl SUBJECT: 2019 Hans Schneider Prize 2019 HANS SCHNEIDER PRIZE Lek-Heng Lim from University of Chicago and Volker Mehrmann from TU Berlin are 2019 Hans Schneider prize recipients. Lek-Heng Lim, and collaborators, have made several fundamental contributions to linear and multilinear algebra, matrix theory, and their applications. These include his work on eigen and singular values of tensors, on tensor ranks, on a Perron-Frobenius theorem for nonnegative tensors, and on ill-posedness and NP-hardness of some tensor problems. A striking result of his shows that every nxn matrix is a product of at most 2n+5 Toeplitz matrices. Another lays the theoretical foundation of measuring the distance between subspaces of different dimensions. This work finds applications in statistics, data analysis, optimization and computational mathematics. At the same time, it makes use of diverse ideas of techniques from several areas of mathematics. Volker Mehrmann was one of the early contributors to the development of efficient and reliable numerical algorithms for systems and control theory. He has made fundamental contributions to the solution of algebraic and differential algebraic equations arising in optimal control, and to efficient numerical codes for implementing these solutions. He has also made very significant contributions to numerical methods for linear algebra problems with special structure (such as Hamiltonian or symplectic) and developed techniques that preserve this structure when computing spectra. He has played an important role in the development of software which implements these algorithmic ideas. He has also made sure that his theoretical results and numerical software are being used in industry. In addition, he has played a very important role in mentoring younger mathematicians, in the working of many mathematical societies, and as an editor of several major journals. Lek-Heng Lim will be awarded the prize at the ILAS Conference in Rio de Janeiro in 2019, and Volker Mehrmann will be awarded the prize at the ILAS Conference in Galway in 2020. The 2019 Hans Schneider Prize Selection Committee consisted of Rajendra Bhatia (chair), Richard Brualdi, Shmuel Friedland, Thomas Laffey, Paul Van Dooren, and Peter Semrl (ex officio). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2018 November 30 ILAS-NET Message No. 2227 CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Louise Deaett Subject: Issue 61 of IMAGE now available The 61st issue of IMAGE is now available online for your perusal at: https://www.ilasic.org/IMAGE/ How can we extend the study of the Laplacian spectrum of a graph to higher-dimensional complexes? He had been a devoted mathematical researcher and educator since 1966, spending most of his career at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research publications were in functional analysis and linear algebra. David had a tremendous influence on the teaching and learning of linear algebra, being one of the original members of the Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group in the 80's. Many of us have had the pleasure of teaching from his linear algebra, calculus or functional analysis textbooks, and those of us who worked with him directly benefitted greatly from his passion for mathematics and insights into mathematics education. He leadership and influence will be greatly missed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2018 October 11 ILAS-NET Message No. 2218 CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Peter Semrl SUBJECT: 2018 ILAS Elections The Nominating Committee for the 2018 ILAS elections has completed its work.
