CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Fernando De Terán
SUBJECT: Call for papers, CMM special issue on Linear Algebra, Matrix Analysis, and Applications

We would like to draw your attention to a special issue of the journal
Computational and Mathematical Methods (CMM) on Linear Algebra, Matrix
Analysis, and Applications

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/25777408

CMM is an interdisciplinary journal dedicated to publishing the world's top
research in the expanding area of computational mathematics, science and
engineering. The journal connects methods in business, economics, engineering,
mathematics and computer science in both academia and industry.

Mathematical modelling of problems arising in engineering, physics, mechanics,
etc. leads in many cases, directly or after a discretization process, to
solving systems of linear equations of finite dimension. Besides, other
problems of Numerical Analysis, such as approximation, interpolation, nonlinear
systems, computation of eigenvalues, etc., lead to the resolution of large
systems. Thus, it is essential to develop efficient numerical Linear Algebra
methods, in both sequential and parallel environments, to solve them. The main
purpose of this Special Issue is to collect the most recent methods for solving
such problems and applications from a multidisciplinary approach.

The guest editors of this special issue are Luca Bergamaschi
(luca.bergamaschi@unipd.it), Fernando De Terán (fteran@math.uc3m.es), and Pedro
Alonso (palonso@uniovi.es).

Submission Details:
Authors should follow the author guidelines. All papers must be submitted via
the online system

https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/compandmathmethods

Authors need to make sure that they specify the paper is a contribution for
"Special Issue on Linear Algebra, Matrix Analysis and Applications" and select
the article type, when prompted. All papers will be peer reviewed according to
the high standards of CMM.

Deadline for submissions: June 30, 2021.

We wish to invite you to participate in the Special Issue with a contribution.

Best regards.

Luca Bergamaschi, Fernando De Terán, and Pedro Alonso

Book description
Matrix positivity is a central topic in matrix theory: properties that
generalize the notion of positivity to matrices arose from a large variety of
applications, and many have also taken on notable theoretical significance,
either because they are natural or unifying. This is the first book to provide
a comprehensive and up-to-date reference of important material on matrix
positivity classes, their properties, and their relations. The matrix classes
emphasized in this book include the classes of semipositive matrices,
P-matrices, inverse M-matrices, and copositive matrices. This self-contained
reference will be useful to a large variety of mathematicians, engineers, and
social scientists, as well as graduate students. The generalizations of
positivity and the connections observed provide a unique perspective, along
with theoretical insight into applications and future challenges. Direct
applications can be found in data analysis, differential equations,
mathematical programming, computational complexity, models of the economy,
population biology, dynamical systems and control theory.

Reviews
'When one thinks of positive matrices, usually only entrywise positive
matrices and positive definite matrices come to mind. This book compiles
results about an amazing array of 'positive' matrices beyond such familiar
ones; semipositive matrices, inverse M-matrices and copositive matrices, to
name a few. The treatment is lucid and a pleasure to read. Will facilitate
anyone to widen the knowledge of matrix classes.'

R. B. Bapat - Indian Statistical Institute

'Positivity is one of the central topics in mathematics. Positivity of
matrices is a rich and interesting research area of linear algebra and
combinatorial matrix theory. Exhibiting many positivity classes of matrices
with diligence, this monograph will be a very useful reference in research and
applications.'

SUBJECT: ILAS new partner with AMS for JMM

Dear ILAS members:

With great joy, I am writing to announce a new partnership between ILAS and
the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Under this new agreement, ILAS
becomes a partner with the AMS for the annual Joint Mathematical Meetings
(JMM) starting in January 2022. There will be an ILAS Lecture, and at least
four ILAS Special Sessions at the JMM.

I want to publicly thank our Secretary/Treasurer Leslie Hogben, who realized
we had this opportunity, and made the initial contact with the AMS last
January. She accompanied me throughout most of the negotiations. Thanks also
go to the Executive Board (EB), who enthusiastically approved Leslie's
suggestion, and worked with her initially. The EB and the entire ILAS Board
helped me keep focused on what was good for ILAS for the duration of the
negotiations.

For the first JMM when this agreement takes effect, in Seattle, Washington,
5-8 January 2022, the ILAS Board will select the speaker for the "ILAS Lecture
at the JMM" and the Special Sessions. For future meetings, the Board will
develop appropriate mechanisms for selection.

If you have suggestions for the first speaker in this series, please write
directly to me at szyld@temple.edu.

If you would want to organize a Special Session please send a short proposal
with the title of the session (and possible speakers) to our Vice-President

SUBJECT: ILAS Lectures at Non-ILAS Conferences and General Support of Non-ILAS Conferences and Seminars

As part of ILAS's commitment to supporting activities in Linear Algebra, the
Society maintains a program of providing some support to non-ILAS conferences.
This financial support may take one of two forms (a conference may apply for
only one of these two forms).

ILAS Lectureships at non-ILAS conferences. It is expected that ILAS lecturers
will be of the stature of plenary speakers at ILAS conferences, and may be
supported by up to US$1000 for expenses, or in the case of a Hans Schneider
Lecturer, US$1500. Reimbursement guidelines may be obtained from the
Secretary/Treasurer.

General support of conferences of up to $750. Such support could be used for
support of student expenses, expenses for participants from developing
countries, or plenary speakers. Refreshment costs are not eligible. You are
welcome to consult the President of ILAS about what you may propose.

This is a reminder that there is a deadline of 30 September 2020 for receipt of
proposals for sponsorship of ILAS Lectures at non-ILAS meetings and for general
support of conferences taking place in 2021. Please note that we will not be
able to consider applications submitted after the deadline as it is important to
rank all applications in one go. Each proposal is automatically assumed to be
also a request for the ILAS endorsement of the conference.

Further details on the guidelines for proposals can be found at the following
link:
http://www.ilasic.org/misc/non_ilas_guidelines.html

In addition, ILAS may endorse a Non-ILAS conference, without financial support.
Such endorsed meetings can list ILAS' endorsement on their website, and in turn,
the conferences are listed in the website of ILAS-Endorsed Meetings:
https://www.ilasic.org/misc/meetings.html

During the Covid-19 pandemic, ILAS is also endorsing online global seminars of
interest to the Linear Algebra Community. Application for such endorsement can
be done following the same guidelines as for conference endorsements. In fact,
ILAS has already endorsed one such seminar: Communications in Numerical Linear
Algebra

SUBJECT: ILAS Lectures at Non-ILAS Conferences and a General Support of Non-ILAS Conferences

As part of ILAS's commitment to supporting activities in Linear Algebra, the
Society maintains a program of providing some support to non-ILAS
conferences. This support may take one of two forms (a conference may apply
for only one of these two forms).

Reimbursement guidelines may be obtained from the
Secretary/Treasurer Leslie Hogben.

General support of conferences of up to $750. Such support could be used for
support of student expenses, expenses for participants from developing
countries, or plenary speakers. Refreshment costs are not eligible. You are
welcome to consult the President Daniel B. Szyld about what you may propose.

This is a reminder that there is a deadline of 30 September 2020 for receipt
of proposals for sponsorship of ILAS Lectures at non-ILAS meetings and for
general support of conferences taking place in 2021. Please note that we will
not be able to consider applications submitted after the deadline as it is
important to rank all applications in one go. Each proposal is automatically
assumed to be also a request for the ILAS endorsement of the conference.

Further details on the guidelines for proposals can be found at the following

SUBJECT: SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra and the embedded ILAS meeting

Dear ILAS members, starting July I will take over Steve Kirkland's spot, as
Vice-President for Conferences. Steve has done a great job over many years,
and it is a great honour for me to walk in his footsteps.

Unusual circumstances have caused us to reschedule the ILAS conferences. Galway
moved to 2022 and Madrid to 2023. And as we shared with you already, we will be
embed an ILAS 2021 meeting in the SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra,
May 17-21, 2021, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Hereby I'd like to share you with
the first information on this cooperation initiative between SIAM and ILAS, and
encourage you to consider organizing a minisymposium, or submitting a
contributed talk or poster.

https://www.siam.org/conferences/cm/conference/la21

Linear algebra is an important area of mathematics and it is at the heart of
many scientific, engineering, and industrial applications. Research and
development in linear algebra include theoretical studies, algorithmic designs
and implementations on advanced computer architectures, and applications to
various disciplines. The SIAM Conferences on Applied Linear Algebra, organized
by SIAM every three years, are the premier international conferences on applied
linear algebra and now with the embedding of the ILAS we also reach out to the
more theoretically oriented linear algebra. We aspire to a fruitful interaction
between theory and application. We will bring together diverse researchers and
practitioners from academia, research laboratories, and industries all over the
world to present and discuss their latest work and results.

Here are some important deadlines.
- October 19, 2020: Minisymposium Proposal Submissions
- November 2, 2020: SIAM Student Travel and Early Career Travel Award
- November 16, 2020: Contributed Lecture, Poster and Minisymposium Presentation Abstracts

SUBJECT: ELA, The Research Journal of ILAS

Dear ILAS Members,

ILAS is without a doubt the premier society focused on all aspects of Linear
Algebra.

Our research journal, the Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra (ELA), can
become the premier journal published work on all aspects of Linear Algebra, a
journal presenting the best science that ILAS members and others produce. Such
a renowned journal would also contribute to the prestige of our society.

Let me also remind you that ELA is a top-tier open-access journal, free to
publish, and free to read and download papers. This puts us in a unique
position these days when governments are starting to insist that the
researchers they fund publish in open-access only journals.

Therefore, I would like to strongly encourage you to submit your high quality
papers to ELA.

As you know, Froilán Dopico joined Michael Tsatsomeros as co-Editor-in-Chief
on August 1st, 2019. The EICs have recently appointed several new Associate
Editors, namely: Francesco Belardo, Steve Butler, Heike Fassbender, Fuad
Kittaneh, Ren-Cang Li, Valeria Simoncini, and K.C. Sivakumar. In addition,
several editors became Advisory Editors: Dario Bini, Sebastian Cioaba, Leslie
Hogben, Raphael Loewy, and Bryan Shader. You can find the complete editorial
board at

https://journals.uwyo.edu/index.php/ela/about/editorialTeam

The newly enlarged board is ready to receive your submissions through the ELA
website:

https://journals.uwyo.edu/index.php/ela/index

I take this opportunity to thank the editorial board for their dedicated
service to the society.

CONTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENT FROM: Daniel Szyld
SUBJECT: ILAS 2020 conference cancelled (or postponed)

It is with sadness that I have to announce that the 23rd ILAS Conference
scheduled to be held at NUI Galway 22-26 June 2020 has been cancelled. The local
organizers together with the ILAS Board reached the conclusion that we could not
hold on making a decision any longer, and given the pattern of the Covid-19
pandemic, and the measures being taken by NUI, it would be very unlikely that we
will be able to hold the meeting in June.

We will try to reschedule an ILAS Conference for NUI Galway for a future date,
and "you will be the first to know."

Everyone who registered will be contacted by NUI and receive a refund (though
this may take some time). If you made your own hotel arrangements, please cancel
your reservation directly with the hotel. Most airlines are waiving cancellation
fees, so hopefully not many people will be hit financially for this cancellation.

Some details will be posted on the conference website, when available.
http://ilas2020.ie/

We were all very much looking forward to the conference, and it is so unfortunate
that we need to cancel it at this time.

Let me publicly thank Rachel Quinlan and Helena Smigoc who co-chaired the
organization of this conference, and all members of the local organizing, and the
scientific committees for their hard work. We are all disappointed, but I know
they are especially so. They should know that the whole ILAS community
appreciates their efforts. We shall have the chance to thank them in person when
we can reschedule.

SUBJECT: Message from the new President of ILAS

I want to thank the ILAS membership for the trust you have put in me to usher the
Society through the next three years. I have very big shoes to fill, following
the tenure of Peter Semrl, and earlier Steve Kirkland, Danni Heshkowitz, Richard
Brualdi, and Hans Schneider. The Society is in good health thanks to them, and
all the officers who work hard to promote and advance Linear Algebra.

Since March 1st (and even before then), I have been working with Peter Semrl
towards a smooth transition, and with the other members of the Executive Board
(Hugo Woerdeman, Leslie Hogben, Steve Kirkland). I am setting up the appointed
committees, and you will be able to read about their constitution in the
forthcoming report of the President and the Vice-President.

Please do write to me, or to any of the officers, with ideas, issues, suggestions
(or complaints). I want to continue to serve you, the members. Thank you again
for this honor, and this opportunity.

SUBJECT: Message from the Outgoing ILAS President

Today is the last day of my second term as ILAS President. It has been a great
honour to serve our society. The best realisation I've had over these past six
years was that there are so many members willing to dedicate their time and
energy to ILAS. It is people like this that make the society successful. At the
end of my term I would like to thank all of them for their hard work. It was a
pleasure to be a part of this group of dedicated people.

Our discipline, linear algebra, is doing very well, at least in part due to the
activities of ILAS. From tomorrow on the society will have a new President
Daniel Szyld. I am confident that both, linear algebra and our society, will
continue to flourish under his leadership.

Reimbursement guidelines may be obtained from the
Secretary/Treasurer Leslie Hogben.

General support of conferences of up to $750. Such support could be used for
support of student expenses, expenses for participants from developing
countries, or plenary speakers. Refreshment costs are not eligible. You are
welcome to consult the President Peter Semrl about what you may propose.

SUBJECT: New ELA url and management system

Dear ILAS Community,

We are writing to inform you that ELA will be moving to a new location and a
new management system on January 10, 2020.

Previously, ELA had been hosted by BePress through an arrangement with the
University of Wyoming. BePress was a non-profit based out of UC Berkeley and
one of the first champions of open journals. Recently, BePress was acquired by
Elsevier. The University of Wyoming was faced with a decision on whether or
not to stay with BePress but under a new financial arrangement. They elected to
join a consortium of universities in the Rocky Mountains and select the Open
Journal Systems (OJS) as its platform for on-line journals. OJS is part of
the Public Knowledge Project (https://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/) which is "an initiative
developing (free) open source software and conducting research to improve the
quality and reach of scholarly publishing." PKP was started in 1998 at the
University of British Columbia. Over 10,000 journals use the OJS system.

The new website for ELA is located at https://journals.uwyo.edu/index.php/ela.
Please take a look at it. If you see anything that needs to be changed please
email elamath@uwyo.edu with the subject: ELA website suggestion.

For those of you who currently have an article that is being considered for
submission to the Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra. This platform, like the
previous platform, is hosted by the University of Wyoming Libraries. Your
article has been uploaded into the new platform and an account has been created
for you. You will soon receive an email to the email associated with your
submission with your new log-in name and temporary password. Additionally, you
will receive some emails as the submission is moved to the correct status in
the management system.

For more information about how to access reviews and resubmit edits on the new
platform, please follow this link:
https://docs.pkp.sfu.ca/learning-ojs/en/authoring

The move will necessitate some changes in how you interface with ELA.

* If you don't have a paper in the review process, the next time you submit a
paper, you need to create an account on the management system. You will have
the option providing your ORCID; we strongly encourage this.
* All submissions and revisions will be done through the portal at
https://journals.uwyo.edu/index.php/ela. Acknowledgements and updates on
submissions will be sent from noreply@journals.uwyo.
* You will be able to track the status of your papers by logging into the
management system; and referee reports and decision letters will be posted
there. Whenever an action is taken on a paper, an e-mail will also be sent.
* After acceptance of a paper, you will be asked to provide source files of
the paper. This, as well as the final approval of page proofs, will be done
through the portal.

For more information about how to access reviews and re-submit on the new
platform, please follow this link:
https://docs.pkp.sfu.ca/learning-ojs/en/authoring

SUBJECT: 7th IMA Conference on Numerical Linear Algebra and Optimization

7th IMA Conference on Numerical Linear Algebra and Optimization
24-26 June 2020, Birmingham
https://ima.org.uk/12530/7th-ima-conference-on-numerical-linear-algebra-and-optimization/

The IMA is pleased to announce the Seventh Biennial IMA Conference on
Numerical Linear Algebra and Optimization.

The success of modern codes for large-scale optimization is heavily dependent
on the use of effective tools of numerical linear algebra. On the other hand,
many problems in numerical linear algebra lead to linear, nonlinear or
semidefinite optimization problems. The purpose of the conference is to bring
together researchers from both communities and to find and communicate points
and topics of common interest. This Conference has been organised in
cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

Conference topics include any subject that could be of interest to both
communities, such as:

  * Direct and iterative methods for large sparse linear systems.
  *   Eigenvalue computation and optimization.
  * Large-scale nonlinear and semidefinite programming.
  * Effect of round-off errors, stopping criteria, embedded iterative
procedures.
  * Optimization issues for matrix polynomials
  *   Fast matrix computations.
  *   Compressed/sparse sensing
  *   PDE-constrained optimization
  *   Distributed computing and optimization
  * Applications and real time optimization
