The ILAS James and Judy Weaver Award of the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) recognizes individuals who have demonstrated significant and sustained service to the field of linear algebra and to ILAS. The award honors contributions that strengthen the community and advance the society’s mission.

Award date and period

The ILAS James and Judy Weaver Service Award is awarded every three years at an appropriate ILAS conference, as decided upon by the ILAS Executive Board.

Eligibility and General Criteria

Nominees must be current members of the International Linear Algebra Society who have shown sustained commitment to the society and its community.

An award recipient is expected to meet one or more of the following criteria:

1. Distinguished Contribution: Demonstrated notable contributions to the advancement of linear algebra through research, education, outreach, or related community activities.
2. Service to the Community: Active and meaningful service to ILAS, such as leadership roles, conference organization, editorial work, or contributions to society initiatives.
3. Leadership and Influence: Evidence of leadership within the linear algebra community, including mentoring, collaboration on innovative projects, or fostering a supportive and inclusive professional environment.
4. Creative Practices: Introduction of creative practices, new methodologies, or innovative approaches that have benefited ILAS or the broader linear algebra community.
5. Mentorship: Sustained dedication to mentoring and supporting students and early-career mathematicians.

Procedure

The ILAS President shall appoint a committee consisting of at least three ILAS members to recommend an award winner to the ILAS Executive Board. The ILAS President shall appoint a replacement for any Award Committee member who may have a conflict of interest once the nominations have been received.

The committee shall solicit nominations for the award from the general membership of ILAS, as well as from other members of the scientific community.

The nomination shall consist of:

• A nomination letter of no more than two pages which includes a detailed summary of the nominee’s contributions and service to ILAS.
• Two letters of support (of no more than two pages each).
• A CV of the nominee.

The Award Committee shall notify the ILAS President of its selection at least six months prior to the award date. The notification must be accompanied by a written justification, as well as a citation that can be used for a certificate and read at award time. The ILAS Executive Board may accept, reject, or change the nomination at least four months prior to the award date.

Notification of award

The ILAS President shall notify the recipient of the Award at least four months in advance of the award date. An invitation shall also be extended to the recipient to attend the award ceremony to receive the Award and to present a speech at the banquet acknowledging their service accomplishments.

The Award Presentation

The ILAS President shall announce the Award at the chosen conference and present the Award to the recipient. An announcement of the Award recipient shall appear in ILAS’ media.

Description of the Award

The Award consists of a certificate containing the citation. The awardee will be invited to give a dedicated banquet speech at an ILAS Conference, with all reasonable expenses to attend the meeting covered by ILAS.
